If you speak of educational institutes in Peshawar and do not hear about Islamia College, it would be unjust to it. In fact, Islamia College is the face of Peshawar. Its iconic landmark is found in print & media everywhere, even on the Rs100 note. Founded by the personal initiatives led by Sir S.A. Qayyum and Sir George Roos-Keppel in 1913, it is one of the oldest institutions of education in Pakistan, and its historical roots are traced from the culminating point of the Aligarh Movement.
Islamia College is the indirect mother of many educational institutes of Peshawar. The University of Peshawar was the first child, born in the 1950s as an offshoot of Islamia College Peshawar. Initially established as Islamia College, until in 2008, the Government of Pakistan granted it the status of a university. The word college is retained in its title for preserving its historical roots.

University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Peshawar, is a premier institution of higher education in the field of engineering sciences. Established as a university in 1980, today it boasts twenty-two departments, covering an entire spectrum of engineering disciplines, from the traditional such as electrical and mechanical, to the cutting-edge technologies such as electronics, mechatronics and industrial engineering. On dated. 20 September 2012, the name of this university has been changed from "Khyber Pakhtunkhwa University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar" to "University of Engineering and Technology Peshawar".
